Botulinum Toxin
Botulinum toxin type A is a natural purified protein that relaxes specific facial muscles that cause expression lines, creating a natural appearance. Once the muscles are relaxed, you cannot contract them and continue to make undesirable facial features. Thus the lines gradually smooth and new lines are prevented from forming.

The most commonly treated areas are the frown lines, forehead lines and crows feet. Botulinum toxin can also be used to create an eyebrow lift, stop the mouth from pulling down, relax nose lines and chin creases, sculpt the lower face, reduce vertical neck bands and treat excessive armpit sweating.

A small amount of the botulinum toxin is injected into selected facial muscles using a very fine needle. Generally treatment takes about 10-15 minutes. Discomfort is typically minimal and brief, and no anaesthetic is usually required. The injection may sting for a few seconds but normal activities can be resumed soon after. After the injection, it takes 2-3 days for the effects to begin and about 7 days to see the full result.

The dose recommended will wary depending on your individual situation and the severity of your lines. The effect can last up to 4 months before lines slowly begin to return. If you have repeated treatments, the effect tends to last longer.

In the amounts used for facial treatments the side effects are usually temporary and localised to the area of injection. Possible side effects include headaches, local muscle weakness including drooping eyelids, lack of feeling, skin tightness and nausea.

Botulinum toxin is also used to treat axillary hyperhidrosis or excessive underarm sweating. It works by reducing the activity of the sweat glands by stopping the nerve transmission to the glands. It tends to last for approximately 6-8 months. Sweating gradually return after this time.

Botulinum toxin is manufactured by Allergan in California, USA. Please click here for manufacturer's website to view before and after photo gallery.

Dermal Filler / Hyaluronic Acid
The most common dermal filler used is a crystal-clear form of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body. Hyaluronic acid holds water, hydrating and giving volume to the skin. It creates volume for the treatment of lips, lines, wrinkles and facial folds.

It's results are immediate and treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.   As we get older the production of our natural hyaluronic acid diminishes. A single injection of hyaluronic acid replenishes the lost volume and improves your look by enhancing your profile.

Hyaluronic acid is most commonly used to enhance, define and enlarge lips, and to fill nasolabial folds, the folds from the nose to the corner of the mouth. It lasts up to one year, depending on the area being treated, the depth of the lines, the condition of the skin and the lifestyle of the individual. Most people return at 6-9 months for a top up.

Hyaluronic acid treatment involves injection into the skin, you therefore may experience some discomfort, however local anaesthetic can be used to minimise pain. The side effects of treatment may include swelling, redness and occasional bruising. Other side effects may include minor lumps, itching or tenderness, which usually pass quickly.

Hyaluronic acid is manufactured by Q-Med in Sweden. Please click here for manufacturer's website to view before and after photo gallery.

At Melbourne Cosmetic Medicine, we are excited to introduce a new fourth generation hyaluronic acid dermal filler manufactured using Cohesive Polydensified Matrix (CPM) technology, to give our clients more options to choose the dermal filler that best suits their needs. Also known as Essential Beauty with CPM, the new hyaluronic acid dermal filler is biodegradable and biocompatible, and there is no risk of allergies. The product has dynamic cross-linking, and is thus elastic and supple, causing less pain during injection, and integrates perfectly and homogenously into the skin for immediate and long-term results that last between 6 to 12 months. It is ideal for treating moderate to deep wrinkles, furrows, scars, increasing the volume of cheeks and chins, and lip enhancement.

The new hylauronic acid is manufactured by Anteis in Geneva, Switzerland. Please click here for manufacturer's website to view before and after photo gallery.

Lipodissolve / Lipolysis
Lipodissolve or lipolysis is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. During this procedure the substance phosphatidylcholine is directly injected into undesired fat deposits. The active substance is a natural compound made from the soybean. The body itself produces this substance to dissolve and breakdown fat from cholesterol. The phosphatidylcholine mixture is manufactured by Australian Custom Pharmaceuticals, an accredited compounding pharmacy based in Sydney.

Lipodissolve injections must not be regarded as a new miracle drug for weight reduction. But when it comes to fat deposits which cannot be eliminated by dieting and exercises, lipodissolve injections initiate a process during which fat is melted away and then eliminated from the body via the usual metabolic process.

The medication is directly injected into the area concerned. As a result, fat cells start to melt away and are eliminated to an increasing degree. And due to it's elasticity, the skin contracts to build a smooth homogeneous surface.

Lipodissolve is most commonly used on the upper and lower belly, saddlebags, inner thighs, love handles and the upper arms. Injections take about 10-15 minutes, and usually do not require any anaesthetic. As a rule, 2-4 treatments about 2 months apart are needed. More than 80% of patients are very satisfied with the results after 2-3 treatments.

Almost every patient shows some temporary side-effects after treatment like redness, swelling, bruising, aching and itching. After a few days, however, any discomfort at the treated region will have disappeared. No permanent or serious side effects have been reported by doctors who have specialised training in this technique by Network-Lipolysis.

Sciton Intense Pulse Light / Laser

Specially imported from California, USA, the Sciton Intense Pulse Light (IPL) or Broadband Light (BBL) and erbium laser is one of the most powerful aesthetic laser and light based systems in the world. It is registered and approved by both the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) in Australia, and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the USA.

The BBL has seven different filters for multiple wavelength bands (400 to 1400nm) and four different spot sizes, that can be customised to treat the widest range of clinical conditions, sometimes simultaneously too. Treatments are more comfortable with a large sapphire crystal to provide precise (0-30 degrees) and powerful contact cooling for maximum comfort, consistent results and safety.

BBL PhotoRejuvenation
BBL broadband light's innovative technology sets new standards for the treatment of skin conditions associated with ageing, active lifestyles and sun damage. BBL light energy allows the appropriate wavelength or filter to be selected, for precise treatment to match your skin's condition and your desired results.

The conditions treated with BBL includes fine wrinkles, age spots, small facial veins (telangiectasia), rosacea, redness and flushing, freckles, brown spots, birth marks, port wine stains, red spots (haemangiomas), enlarged pores, burn erythema and hyperpigmentation.

The light energy delivered by the BBL will gently heat up the upper layers of your skin. The heat absorbed by the targeted areas will stimulate your skin cells to generate new collagen. This will help restore your skin to it's natural beauty, blending its natural colours and making it smoother, vibrant and younger looking.

Any area of the body can be treated. The most common areas are those exposed to the damaging effects of sun light. The most popular treatments are for the face, neck, back of hands, chest and shoulders. Usually 2-5 treatments at 2-4 weeks interval are needed. This is a non-invasive and gentle procedure with virtually no down-time. In most cases you will be able to return to work, apply makeup, and resume most of your activities right away.

A Medicare rebate of $117 may be claimed for BBL treatment of vascular lesions of the head or neck where abnormality is visible from 3 meters, up to a maximum of 6 sessions in any 12 month period. The remaining out-of-pocket costs may then be eligible for the Medicare Safety Net, more information of which can be obtained by ringing Medicare Australia on 13 20 11.

BBL Hair Removal
BBL broadband light energy can selectively target microstructures such as hair follicles, for the treatment of unwanted hair. Your treatment will be tailored for your skin type to ensure the safest, most effective and most comfortable treatment. An integrated system for cooling your skin will be used to remove heat and should ensure a comfortable treatment. Treatment time will depend upon the area to be treated. The BBL is suitable for most skin types, except very dark skin. Tanned skin should not be treated. Please avoid tanning, using tanning products or sun exposure for at least three weeks before treatment.

BBL selectively targets the melanin in the follicles of your unwanted hairs, and heats them with infrared energy, while sparing other structures in your skin. Unlike other epilation processes, BBL treats many hairs at once, making the treatment of large areas practical, for a safe, fast, effective and gentle treatment.  Usually 4-6 treatments at 6-8 weeks interval are needed. There are three phases of hair growth - anagen, catagen and telogen. Only hairs in the active growth phase, anagen, can be successfully treated.

SkinTyte
The SkinTyte procedure utilises a broadband of light energy to deeply heat dermal collagen. This process promotes partial denaturation and contraction of collagen. The heat also initiates the body's natural healing process which creates a renewed collagen foundation leading to increased skin firmness. Powerful cooling maintains the outer surface of your skin at a cool temperature before, during and after each pulse, providing a comfortable and safe procedure. A series of pulses will be repeated over the treatment area to ensure best results. Actual time of treatment will depend on the area treated.

SkinTyte is a non-invasive procedure with no downtime so you can resume regular activities immediately following treatment. You can also apply makeup and sunscreen after each treatment. The SkinTyte procedure is not a substitute for a face-left and results may vary from person to person. It is recommended for those who desire moderate, noticeable skin improvements without having to undergo surgery. Full results often take up to four months as the collagen foundation of your skin is rebuilt and strengthened.

SkinTyte treatments are safe for all skin types and can be performed on any area of the body where an improvement in your skin firmness is desired. Popular areas include the face, neck, abdomen and arms. A series of 2-3 treatments spaced a month apart is usually needed.

MicroLaser Peel
The Sciton comes with a 2940mm Er:YAG (erbium) laser, used for MicroLaser Peels. This is the gold standard for superficial resurfacing. The computer guided scanner sets the ideal beam overlap for perfect coverage and uniform and precise ablation of the outermost layers of the skin. If you are looking for more than microdermabrasion or light chemical peels, and have little time for a prolonged healing process from a full skin resurfacing, then MicroLaser Peel was designed for you. Generally, microdermabrasion only removes the stratum corneum (10 microns). The MicroLaser Peel is a partial to full epidermal peel (10-50 microns) and is performed with topical anaesthetic.

MicroLaser Peel treat unwanted skin conditions typical of ageing and active lifestyles. Skin conditions such as wrinkles, scars, acne scars, keratoses or pigmentary problems have been very successfully treated with MicroLaser Peel. You will experience smoother, healthier, more vibrant skin, with a significant immediate change in skin texture and tightness as compared to microdermabrasion.

MicroLaser Peel is the weekend treatment with immediate, lasting results with little time off, minimal discomfort and easy post-treatment care. Typically, the procedure is repeated 2-4 times, spaced 6-8 weeks apart. Healing takes 3-4 days. The procedure can be performed on a Thursday or a Friday, so you can return to work the following Monday. Symptoms immediately following the procedure resemble a sunburn, with minor sloughing on the second day. Redness will begin to fade by the third day, and be easily covered by makeup on the fourth day.

ProFractional
The Sciton erbium laser also comes with a ProFractional module, for fractional resurfacing. ProFractional is a quick and comfortable laser procedure with little or no down time, used for improving the overall appearance of your skin. ProFractional uses laser energy to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin which are surrounded by areas of healthy, untreated skin. The zones of untreated skin invigorate the body's natural healing process, and the treated areas stimulate production of new collagen, plumping up the skin and smoothing out wrinkles, lines, scars and other irregularities. And because only a fraction of the skin is directly treated with the laser, healing time is quick and downtime is short.

If you are looking for younger looking skin, or to improve scars, wrinkles, or sun damage in a comfortable treatment with a fast recovery, then you maybe an ideal candidate. ProFractional can be used to improve a wide variety of skin conditions, but is most used for: wrinkles and fine lines, post-traumatic scars, acne scars, age spots, sun spots, freckles, and ageing and sun-damaged skin. Most skin areas can be treated. Popular areas are the face, neck, chest and hands.

ProFractional is a fast and comfortable procedure. A numbing cream may be applied in advance to aid in comfort during the procedure. ProFractional is typically done in a series of 1-4 treatments, spaced 3-6 weeks apart. Immediately following the procedure you may experience a mild redness, resembling a light sunburn sensation. Complete healing takes only about 1-3 days and most people can get back to work and apply makeup within 1-2 days after the treatment.

A Medicare rebate of up to $306 may be claimed for ProFractional erbium laser resurfacing of the face or neck for severely disfiguring scarring resulting from trauma, burns or acne. The remaining out-of-pocket costs may then be eligible for the Medicare Safety Net, more information of which can be obtained by ringing Medicare Australia on 13 20 11.

For the ultimate in non-surgical facial rejuvenation with a visible difference in results after one session, we recommend combining treatments for synergistic effects. For example, BBL PhotoRejuvenation can be combined with MicroLaser Peel, SkinTyte and / or ProFractional, for maximum results with less overall downtime. Even better results may also be obtained when combined with botulinum toxin injections for dynamic upper face wrinkles and / or dermal filler injections for lower face wrinkles from volume loss. Cosmetic injections are usually preformed after BBL / laser treatments.
